Its very common thing to see a hit director of two decades back not able to catch up with the changing audience. Slapstick and senseless comedy has no expiry date but the style matters. Inder Kumar is a director who had hardly evolved from his first films to Total Dhamaal. One can have a look at the films he made recently, the Masti series and Dhamaal series. Abundant on PJs and forced comedy, Total Dhamaal is no less. Add to it,some great actors taken on board for doing something super-silly lackluster comedy.
Inder Kumar has roped in huge ensemble containing may if his regulars.
Ritiesh has starred in 6 of his films. Anil Kapoor and Madhuri have also worked quite a lot with him. Of course, the original Dhamaal actors have continued too. The premise of the film is similar to Dhamaal may be because of the second installment’s debacle.
A wealthy mean leaves a wealthy secret indicating treasure in zoo. All the duos march towards the destination. Ajay Devgan is with his friend Sanjay Mishra calling him bro which is one of the most irksome elements in the film.
Javed Jaffrey with his brother Arshad Warsi, and Mahesh Manjrekar with Esha Gupta.
Ritiesh Deshmukh with Johnny Lever and a somewhat best of the worst pair is Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit enacting a Gujarati-Marathi couple having marriage issues. There is an obvious comedy of errors followed by a hulluaballo. What happens and who gets the treasure is the rest of the film.
First things first, the film is unsurprisingly as bad as the trailer. You can expect a lot of extra silly and popular WhatsApp forward jokes in the film. Apart from that you see an immensely talented Sanjay Mishra getting on to your nerves, which has been done earlier also.
The moments are so predictable and spoonfeed that you can’t wait to get up and run away.
Secondly, there are countless characters with hardly any strong characters. Most of them hardly have any substance. All they unfortunately did was to be sincere to the awful writing and dialogues. No one to be blamed except the makers. The film has a bad VFX too.
The film is out and out comedy. In fact its non-stop and lot of conviction. But sadly, not always conviction means success. There has to be a timing. There has to be a beat. Even the additional elements of remixing the old hits doesn’t help the movie. The only (barely ) successful part of the film is Anil Madhuris chemistry and Ritiesh Deshmukhs (who is definitely born for doing comedy). Boman Irani is wasted too.
Though we do not discuss the fate in a review, but this film’s fate will decide the sense of humour levels of the Northen belt of India. The more the success, the poorer the level.
All in all, Total Dhamal is a total waste of actors enacting whatsapp jokes.
